Timanfaya National Park, a grandiose, multi-colored volcanic landscape surrounding the Fire Mountains, stretches across 19 square miles of Lanzarote's northwest coast. It is undoubtedly the highlight of Lanzarote's landscapes, though almost completely devoid of any bird, animal and plant life, and it is your destination today.
History tells of dramatic volcanic eruptions between 1730 and 1736 from which the Fire Mountains resulted. Huge masses of magma buried entire villages, which the inhabitants fortunately had deserted just in time, so there were no casualties despite the horrendous proportions of this natural disaster. The eruptions transformed almost one fourth of the island into a sea of solidified lava, multi-colored volcanic rocks and copper-colored sand. These materials formed the malpaís (Badlands), and more than 250 years after these eruptions, there is still little vegetation here. The temperature below the surface rises quickly from 212 to 752° F.
Hike with your guide to see several craters, lava gorges, volcanic canals and tubes, and even enter the core of the 1730-1736 eruption area to check out some stunning geological formations that make this experience quite unforgettable.
Tour includes approximately three hours of hiking. Wear sturdy, comfortable walking or hiking shoes. Minimum age is 10 years.
