Journey ashore for a visit to Komodo National Park -- a privilege available only to guests booked on this or another shore excursion.
Set out on a walking tour in search of the Komodo dragon -- a fierce and rare reptile. You will walk just under a mile (roughly one hour), accompanied by rangers and an English-speaking guide.
Head to the dragon-viewing spot at Hutan Asamand to take some photos here. Guests with limited walking capability can either walk halfway or remain at the ranger station where Komodo dragons are occasionally seen. An open bar with soft drinks and mineral water is available at the ranger station and reception area.
Komodo's monsoon forests teem with other wildlife's activity, particularly in the morning before the sun is at its peak. Squawking cockatoos flock in often-leafless trees, disturbing large green imperial pigeons, black-napped orioles, sunbirds, flowerpeckers, and noisy friarbirds, while shiny black dragoons and enormous crows soar nearby.
Back at the finish point, you’ll have some free time to shop for locally-made souvenirs.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. The Komodo dragon is wild and is not artificially fed by the local authorities. The park rangers accompanying the tour decide which route the trek will follow. Weather conditions can be extremely hot. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Only guests booked on this or another shore excursion are permitted by the authorities to go ashore on Komodo Island.
