Holland America Line is raising a glass to its Dutch roots by serving two exclusive stroopwafel-themed cocktails in celebration of National Stroopwafel Day on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The Stroopwafel Espresso Martini and Golden Dutch Martini — each crafted to capture the rich, caramel flavors of the Netherlands’ most iconic sweet treat — will be served for the day aboard ships cruising only in Europe.
The Stroopwafel Espresso Martini is made from Stroopwafel Liqueur, Skyy Vodka and espresso, while the Golden Dutch Martini combines Stroopwafel Liquor, Angel’s Envy, Angostura and fresh lemon.
In addition, the cruise line will be offering guests stroopwafel-inspired treats including:
Breakfast: Stroopwafel Banana Bread French Toast (pecans, cinnamon, cream cheese and butter) available at Lido Market and main Dining Room.
Lunch: Nutella Chocolate Dipped Stroopwafel (pistachio or rainbow sprinkle) available at Lido Market and main Dining Room (if open for lunch), and Grand Dutch Café.
Dinner: Stroopwafel Sundae (vanilla ice cream, salted caramel and whipped cream) available in the main Dining Room.
Founded in the Netherlands more than 150 years ago, Holland America Line has carried its Dutch heritage across oceans and generations — from its iconic orange touches to the themed Dutch Day. Serving stroopwafel-inspired cocktails and sweets on National Stroopwafel Day is a flavorful nod to that legacy, offering guests an authentic taste of the Netherlands.
“The stroopwafel is one of the most beloved flavors of the Netherlands, and creating cocktails and treats around it is a celebratory way to honor our roots,” said Drew Foulk, senior manager, beverage and dining operations & innovation for Holland America Line. “We take pride in bringing a taste of home to our guests while showcasing the innovative way we weave our history into every cruise.”
As a cruise line founded in the Netherlands, Holland America Line embraces its Dutch heritage in a variety of ways:
Dutch Day: Dutch Day is a day to recognize Holland America Line’s European history. The centerpiece is a themed Dutch Dinner in the main Dining Room featuring an extensive menu that includes both classic and contemporary Dutch delicacies. A partnership with Daelmans Stroopwafel includes delectable desserts featuring the Dutch staple and a Daelmans Stroopwafel turn-down pillow treat in every stateroom.
Orange Party: Once per cruise on Dutch Day, Holland America Line holds the Orange Party with live music, cocktails and treats. The Orange Party pays homage to the company’s Dutch heritage (orange is the color of the Dutch Royal Family, which hails from the House of Orange), and guests are invited to wear orange attire and accessories — from bowties to boas. During the after-dinner festivities, special orange-themed cocktails are available while servers pass around finger-foods and sweets.
Royal Dutch Tea: On every cruise, guests can indulge in this sea-day favorite featuring Dutch snacks and treats, along with traditional favorites. Served in three tiers, guests will find Dutch sandwiches, a variety of scones and Dutch sweets.
King’s Day: Recognized as a holiday on April 27 in the Netherlands, King’s Day honors the birthday of the reigning Dutch monarch. Holland America Line celebrates this holiday across the fleet.
With its stroopwafel-inspired cocktails and dishes, and Dutch-themed celebrations, Holland America Line continues to honor the culture and traditions that shaped its beginnings. Whether raising a glass on National Stroopwafel Day, donning orange at sea or savoring Royal Dutch Tea, guests are invited to share in a legacy that remains at the heart of every Holland America Line journey.
