Travel an hour by coach to reach the city of Aquileia. Since its foundation in 181 BC, Aquileia has always been a key port due to its strategic location between the Mediterranean Sea and the hinterland to the north. Art and handicrafts were its own primary industries.
Today, you will discover the Aquileia Basilica -- a magnificent Romanesque building embellished with a precious 4th-century mosaic floor. In fact, this floor is the largest mosaic in Western Christendom.
Your local guide will accompany you as you stroll among the excavations of Roman ruins in a genuine open-air museum of inestimable value.
Move on to Redipuglia for a change of pace. You're here to visit Italy's largest War Memorial. It rises from the western face of Mount Sei Busi at Redipuglia, just inland from the Gulf of Trieste. During World War II, this area was bitterly contested. Although it is not particularly tall, Sei Busi offers outstanding views from its summit. Here, on monumental terraces, lie the remains of 100,187 fallen men -- 39,857 knowns and a staggering 60,330 souls whose names are unknown to this day.
