Holland America Line Launches Navigator Mobile Phone App Across Entire Fleet

Leveraging technology to further personalize the cruise experience, Holland America Line is expanding the functionality of its popular browser-based Navigator tool into a user-friendly, free app for mobile phones and tablets that can be used on board. iPhone and Android users can download the Navigator app from the iTunes App and Google Play stores, respectively.

Using Navigator, guests can plan daily activities, explore and book shore excursions, view restaurant menus and make dining reservations, view spa treatments, check their account statement and more. Expected to be the most popular feature is the chat function that enables guests to communicate with each other for free while on board.

With Navigator, guests also are able to select and save activities to personalize their daily schedule. Those activities appear alongside booked dining reservations and shore excursions, keeping everything easily accessible in one place. Notifications can be set up to send reminders and alerts for reservations, messages and more.

Guests who forget to download the Navigator app prior to embarking can download it once on board free of charge without using internet minutes.

In the coming months, Holland America Line will extend the app offerings for both mobile phones and tablets — currently only available to use during a guest’s cruise — to offer pre-voyage access so guests can review available services and check out the interactive fleet map at any time before boarding the ship.

I will be on the 12 days Mediterranean cruise from Rome 1st June 2019.

Is there some dressed up theme nights?

  • Julie

There will be gala nights. Please call reservations to be certain on how many.

  • Hilda

Hello. I will be going to Alaska 11 nights cruise/land tour on the Westerdam in July. Do I need to bring a dressy outfit?

  • Julie

Hi Hilda, there are Gala nights. Most evenings smart casual attire is appropriate. Shorts, pool/beachwear, distressed jeans and men’s tank tops are best left to the daytime and are not permitted in fine dining restaurants. Gala Nights evoke the grand traditions of cruising as guests dress to impress for special events on board, including our five-course gourmet dinner in the Dining Room. For gentlemen, collared shirts and slacks are required in all fine dining restaurants. For women, Dresses, skirts, and slacks are all acceptable.

I would like to know the number of gala nights for the 2020 World Cruise. Finding out on boarding pass us too late😀

  • Julie

Hi Thursa, unfortunately we don’t have that info at the blog, but Reservations should be able to assist! 855-932-1711

I have downloded your application to my mobile phone and create an accound with pin code. It says data is incorrect. Is it because only can be used when boarding and not before? After some trials it says that it is locked.
How can we unlock it and login the application?

Hi my wife and I are cruising from Fort Lauderdale to Santiago on the Zaandam in October. We would like to know if there is sufficient time to visit Machu Pichu whilst in Callao Lima Peru 27 28 Oct 2019 and can Holland America organise it for us?

  • Julie

Hi Jim, you are there overnight so should be time to take Holland America Line’s overland tour to Machu Picchu: Please call to see about booking: 888-425-9376.

Will HAL be adding a “group” function to its app so that you can send a message to more than one person at a time?

  • Tamara

Isn’t this particular blog supposed to be for the Navigator app questions/comments?

My question is regarding the Navigator app. HAL indicates that it is a free onboard app, but don’t you need to connect through your mobile data? If so, wouldn’t you be subject to fees depending on the type of cellular plan you have? I’ve been told that you don’t want to use your mobile phone while on ship as it can be quite costly and that you should wait until you’re off and away from the ship before making calls. Wouldn’t the Navigator app fall under those same conditions?

  • Julie

Hi Tamara, you can use the Navigator App through the ship’s WiFi, which you can connect to for FREE to use this app. Your phone MUST BE on airplane mode, so you don’t get charged from your carrier.

  • Julie

Great question! Let me pass that along to our Navigator App team!

  • miky

Do you need to buy the wifi plan to use the Navigator?

  • Julie

No you do not. It’s through the ship’s WiFi and you are on airplane mode.

  • Debra Clark

Purchasing internet, how does that work. Besides bottled water & wine , can I bring 2 liter pop aboard

  • Julie

Hi Debra, you can purchase an internet package when you embark. You can bring a cooler 12 x 12 x 12 inches in size (that holds 6-12 cans of non-alcoholic beverages). Nothing larger. We are checking on two-liter bottles.

On a cruise that started in Barcelona, it was only necessary to get a Schengen visa for Spain. Other ports visited did not need a visa since we were visiting as passengers

For a cruise that starts in Hong Kong, visits China and ends in Japan, what visas apart from Japan are required?

The booking agent handling this cruise has no idea at all and referred me to a visa company who are also unaware of the requirements when visiting a port as a cruise ship passenger

  • Julie

It depends on your nationality. Please call reservations as soon as possible to make sure you get necessary visas in time. 855-932-1711. You can also visit the Frequently Asked Questions Link on Put “visas” in and information will come up:
