You'll see a great diversity of scenery on this tour as you drive around the West Maui Mountains over to Upcountry Maui and along the North Shore. It's a true adventure that includes getting out along the way to enjoy short walks. There are scenic viewpoints and gardens, and a historical paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town with an acclaimed glassblowing shop, a quaint museum and a charming art gallery.
Your first stop is at McGregor Point, where whales are often seen leaping from the sea during the winter and spring.
Next, head to Upcountry Maui and old Makawao town, where you can still see remnants of this hamlet's paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) past. Today, Makawao is better known as a thriving artist community. Visit the shop of two of the state's leading glassblowers, take in the quaint history museum, visit a charming art gallery that boasts works from a myriad of local artists, or simply sit in the shade outside the public library and 'talk story' with the locals.
On Maui's spectacular North Shore, discover one of the most famous windsurfing sites in the world. You'll pause for a few moments to watch the powerful ocean swells that are characteristic of this area. Watch for aquatic athletes negotiating the waves with their colorful sailboards.
A picnic-style lunch served along the way consists of fresh island fruit, a turkey sandwich and cookies. You will eat outdoors in one of several possible locations.
Your last stop is in the scenic valley between Mt Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains. Here you'll visit the Kepaniwai Park & Heritage Gardens, celebrating the various ethnic groups that make up modern-day Maui, and the Maui Tropical Plantation, set on the grounds of an old sugar mill. Nowadays, visitors are attracted to this beautiful place because of its lush gardens, historical artifacts, lovely views and a chance to pick up some Maui souvenirs.
Finally, you'll drive back to Lahaina via the golden-sand beaches of Maui's west coast.
