Cruises from Venice

Cruises from Venice swirl through the Mediterranean to dreamlike landscapes that have inspired poets and artists for centuries. Choose from a multitude of convenient itineraries—cruises from Venice to Greece feature ancient ruins and sun-soaked islands. Or visit Italy’s most-sought destinations, such as Rome and Naples. Cruises from Venice depart from a place often copycatted, but never replicated—there’s no way to rebuild its colorful palaces and domed cathedrals that rest on the water as if by magic. Although there are plenty of things to do in Venice, getting lost is high on the list. Wander from the throngs into humble wine shops and chocolatiers. Save your agenda for later and take your time watching the sun sink behind the Grand Canal. Venice is, after all, La Serenissima, the serene city. Don’t try to chase your Venice moment, it will find you.

Exploring Venice

Rialto Bridge

To see the Rialto bridge in real life, in all its faded-but-magnificent glory, is unforgettable. The bridge was built in 1591 by the aptly named Antonio da Ponte and the views over the Grand Canal make it one of the icons of La Serenissima. The open-air market at its foot is worth a visit.

Doge’s Palace

A tour of Doge’s Palace is one of the most popular things to do in Venice, but don’t let that deter you—it lives up to the hype. Built in 1340 as the residence of the Doge of Venice, it is a stunning example of Venetian Gothic style with signature pointed arches that line the outside. It is now a museum—go inside to see the lavish interiors.

Teatro La Fenice

Aptly named after the phoenix, this opera house has risen from the ashes three times, the last in 1996 when it was burned in an act of arson. It was recreated in the same style—a choice that some criticized as not as courageous as starting anew. But you will soon find out that Venetians like things the way they are. Teatro La Fenice is open daily for performances and self-guided tours.

Cruises from Venice are not complete without seeing Murano —seven linked islands and the home of Venetian art glass. While you're sure to find cheap knockoffs at the city souvenir stands, Murano glass factories sell one-of-a-kind pieces made in front of your eyes. Like French champagne, Murano glass is highly regulated and secrets behind its creation are closely guarded.
