Cruises From Fairbanks

Our Alaska Cruisetours are the only way to see this fascinating town as part of your Alaska cruise. And it is something to see. Fairbanks, Alaska’s second-largest city was born of gold rush frenzy, thanks to Felix Pedro, a prospector who found the precious metal in 1902 in a stream now known as “Pedro Creek.” Fairbanks features captivating excursions for history enthusiasts. Hop aboard a three-hour Riverboat Discovery Tour and visit the kennels of the late four-time Iditarod champion, Susan Butcher. Pan for gold in the Tanana Valley and explore the site of Gold Dredge 8. Though much of Fairbanks today is an amalgam of modern shops and malls, its history is celebrated at Pioneer Park, which features the Tanana Railroad Museum and a gold rush town comprising 35 restored buildings.

Things To Do In Fairbanks

Riverboat Discovery

In 1950 Captain Jim Binkley, Sr. and his wife, Mary, launched a riverboat-excursion tourism business, which eventually grew from one 25-person boat to the current 900-passenger Discovery III sternwheeler. Three-hour tours with Riverboat Discovery visit the home and kennels of the late four-time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher and include a tour of a Chena Athabascan Indian village led by a Native Alaskan—as well as time to shop for souvenirs at the Steamboat Landing trading post.

Chena Hot Springs Resort

One of the most relaxing things to do before you cruise out of Fairbanks, Alaska. Chena Hot Springs, discovered by settlers in 1905, is renowned for its healing waters as well as the resort’s outdoor activities. Take a soak in hot tubs or in the steaming natural Rock Lake. The resort's restaurant offers greenhouse-to-table cuisine and the Trails End lounge is ideal for a post–soak drink.

University of Alaska Museum of the North

Located on the campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the Museum of the North houses 11 categories of collections, including archaeology, earth sciences and fine arts. Highlights range from the state’s most comprehensive display of gold, a 36,000-year-old mummified bison and Alaskan paintings and sculpture.
