This pairing of culture and cuisine, shared by just 14 privileged guests, wraps the finest of tasting lunches at award-winning Papadakis Restaurant around a visit to the sublime Acropolis Museum of Athens.
A 30-minute panoramic drive to the heart of Athens brings you to the Acropolis Museum. This modern, five-story structure by architect Bernard Tschumi is carefully designed to allow its rich collection of antiquities and sculptures to be seen in natural light. Artifacts depicting everyday life in Athens during all periods of history are dramatically showcased within glass-floored galleries. The pièce de résistance is the top floor, where you'll see the frieze from the Parthenon laid out in a life-size footprint. Turn around for a view of the Parthenon itself through enormous glass windows -- a magnificent synthesis of source and study.
It's well worth the short drive north to Papadakis Restaurant. The superb view of the Acropolis from the dining room is one thing; having Greek celebrity chef Argiro Barbarigou at the helm is quite another. If ever a single human was able to bottle the essence and spirit of Greek food, it is Barbarigou. This charming 'First Lady of Greek Cuisine' has devoted her life to sharing the secrets of the Greek kitchen -- both modern and ancient -- with her fans around the globe. It's no wonder Food & Wine magazine happily dubs Barbarigou, the country's foremost female chef.
Today at Papadakis, a fabulous tasting menu introduces you to delicacies from all over Greece. Perhaps you will try a mixed green salad with caramelized figs, walnuts and grilled goat cheese; or octopus with a traditional island potato salad; fava bean purée with caramelized onions, sautéed prawns with chili; white grouper with fresh truffles and potatoes in a wine sauce; or Greek millefeuille with yogurt, honey and walnuts. Whatever the fare on your exceptional tasting agenda, it will be perfectly matched with hand-selected Greek wines for the appetizer, main course and dessert.
