An hour from Christchurch, Akaroa is a seaside French settlement situated in the blown-out crater of an extinct volcano. It is a paradise for foodies and wine lovers.
With a small group, you'll savor an indulgent day at the Akaroa Cooking School -- learning, eating fabulous food, and drinking wonderful wines in a stunning location. This institution of culinary excellence showcases the fresh ingredients of its surroundings, leaving you inspired and impressed.
Stroll down the pier to the school and start your day with tea, coffee and freshly-baked pastries.
The cooking school buys its ultra-fresh seafood directly from a local fisherman who brings in the catch and sells it right on the wharf, only seconds from the front door. The shellfish comes from Akaroa Harbour, and free-range beef and lamb are farmed on the surrounding hillsides. Olive oil, local honey, nuts, and fresh, organic fruits and vegetables form the basis of the menu you will prepare today.
Four courses of superb cuisine are demonstrated in master-class style and are plated right in front of you. Ask questions, take photographs and move into the bright, airy dining area, where each dish is served alongside award-winning local wines that reflect the unique characteristics of fruit from the nearby Takamatua Valley.
Guests who wish to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, then make their own way back to the tender pier, a short walk away.
