Gran Canaria may be known for its riveting landscapes, sun-soaked villages, and inviting beaches, but its best-kept secret is its lovely gardens. Each garden featured on this tour is an unhurried refuge — a magical oasis a world away from the city's hustle and bustle.
Your coach winds its way from the pier into the heart of Las Palmas to the Garden City neighborhood, established in the late 19th century by British ex-pats. Their legacy is one of elegant homes, including the official residence of the President, and Doramas Park. Doramas features a placid lake, waterfalls, a wooden bridge over a koi pond, and two playgrounds. Relax and rejuvenate as you stroll past flowers, cacti and native Canarian plants.
In the hill town of Tafira Alta, a 27-acre Botanical Garden perches on terraces hosting 500 endemic plant species, including the iconic dragon tree. Note the 10,000 cacti and the remnant laurel trees that once covered much of the island.
The Duchess of Arucas Botanical Gardens, planted in 1880 by the island's first Marquis and his wife, are a romantic and serene five-acre setting with 2,500 tropical plants. Meander the grounds and marvel at the 200-year-old dragon tree tucked among the cacti and palms. A resident peacock may accompany you on your walk.
Top off your tour with a typical Canarian snack of wrinkled potatoes, olives, cheese and wine before returning to the ship.
