Board your coach for a scenic drive through the beautiful countryside of the North Pennines.
At Heddon-on-the-Wall, you will have an opportunity to see a well-preserved stretch of Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans to protect the northern limits of their empire from attack by the Celts.
Continue west along a main highway and turn south to travel across Muggleswick Common, with views of Bolt's Law. You'll stop at the Stanhope Dales Centre to shop at the small craft boutiques. Visit the Information Center here or perhaps enjoy a cup of tea in the Tea Shop (at your own expense).
The drive now heads west across the Pennines and through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty known as England's Last Wilderness. Here, the air is pure and clear and you will take in wonderful views over the high Pennines in a totally unspoiled rural area. Wildflowers are everywhere, including wild pansies and the rare grass of Parnassus. Watch for the impressive peak of Burnhope Seat to the south.
In the village of Alston -- the highest market town in England -- the steep cobblestone streets provide excellent views of the surrounding countryside.
A journey north takes you out of Pennines country and winds through showstopping scenery of ancient buildings, tiny villages and thriving market towns. From Haydon Bridge, you will turn east to begin the drive back to Newcastle, with a short detour through the ancient Roman town of Corbridge before heading back to the ship.
