Welcome to the heart of North Kohala, deep in the heart of Hawaii's countryside, where ancient sugar plantations, lush valleys, and cascading waterfalls reveal the powerful role water has played in shaping both the land and the legacy of the islands. North Kohala is also the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, adding a rich historical layer to your journey.
Your tour begins with a scenic drive north along the Kohala Coast. Pass through the charming plantation towns of Hawi and Kapa'au, each offering a glimpse into Hawaii's rural past.
Board a 4x4 touring vehicle and venture off-road behind locked gates to access a private nature reserve — a privilege reserved exclusively for your group. A one-mile trail represents an opportunity for you to hike and explore. As you walk along the mountain-fed stream, you'll encounter stunning waterfalls and the remnants of the 22-mile Kohala Ditch — an irrigation marvel for early-1900s sugarcane plantations. The trail winds through lush forest and offers breathtaking vista views of the Pacific coastline and surrounding valleys. Midway through your hike, you'll have the chance to cool off with a swim in a secluded mountain stream, surrounded by cascading falls — a truly magical moment in paradise.
Finally, it's time to refuel with a premium picnic lunch. Perch on one of the most breathtaking overlooks in Hawaii — Mokulanikila — for panoramic views of lush valleys, azure waters, and rugged cliffs.
Head back to the pier and rejoin the ship.
