Head north to the seaside town of Peterhead, well known for its oil industry support and for its prison.
Peterhead Prison was in operation from 1888 to 2013 and bore the unfortunate reputation of being Scotland's toughest prison. Some famous inmates resided here, including serial killer Hannibal the Cannibal. The prison is best known for the 1987 riot, which ended with Special Forces intervention after a prison officer was held hostage on the roof for almost five days without food or water.
Take a self-guided visit within the building, and you'll have some time to browse in the gift shop afterward.
