Travel along the road bordering the River Clyde to Glasgow, whose skyline is a kaleidoscope of architectural gems with a magnificent 12th-century cathedral and revolutionary Art Nouveau buildings. Glasgow's famed art galleries and museums speak to a proud cultural heritage.
In the center of the city, a panoramic sightseeing drive showcases George Square — Glasgow's oldest public square and the heart of the city — and Glasgow Cathedral (1136), easily the best relic of the medieval city and the only cathedral in mainland Scotland to have survived the Reformation virtually intact.
Continue to Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum. The building itself is a large and imposing Victorian red sandstone construction. The ever-changing contemporary exhibits compete for your attention, with dinosaurs, suits of armor, brutal weaponry and treasures from around the world. Kelvingrove also houses a superb collection of paintings by Botticelli, Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso. Salvador Dalí's world-renowned Christ of St John of the Cross is housed here. Your guide will lead you to the section specifically featuring Scotland, from Robert the Bruce and Mary, Queen of Scots, through modern-day political figures and wonderful Scottish landscapes. If you prefer, you can independently explore the many other galleries and exhibits. Either way, you will be enthralled.
Take photographs of the pinnacled Gothic buildings of Glasgow University, founded in 1451, on the hillside above the River Kelvin.
