Set out with your guide on a walk through the narrow streets within the fortified Old Town of Monemvasia. The streets are so narrow that in many places, the going is almost single file.
Wind your way through lanes packed with houses and Byzantine churches. The latter are mostly in ruins, but a fortunate exception is the Church of Christ Chained to the Cross, which now serves as the island’s cathedral. It dates to the 13th century AD with alterations made during the Venetian occupation. As the church is under renovation, only an outside visit is possible. If you choose to attempt the climb on the steepest side of the cliff, you will reach the ethereal and beautiful Church of St Sofia. This 13th-century church is a rare example of domed octagonal design. Once at the top, the view of the sea and the houses of the lower town is sublime.
Notes:
Elkomenos Church is under renovation until 2026; it is an outside visit only. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
