Probolinggo is located in East Java and is most famous for being the main access point for Mt Bromo. This short tour offers the perfect overview of the city. Travel by coach to City Square—a favorite with local residents. On one side of the square, there is a magnificent mosque. From there, you’ll take a pedi-cab ride to see the Red Church. Inside this eye-catching, colorful church is a Bible that dates back to the 16th century. Hop back on the pedi-cab and continue to the Probolinggo Museum to watch a traditional dance demonstration and enjoy a local snack. The museum exhibits various modes of transport used in the past—cikar, bicycles, locomotives and aircraft, as well as agricultural equipment, weapons and plenty of fascinating information about the area. Your pedi-cab ride continues to the Pasar Baru (New Market), where locals buy and sell all kinds of wares. From there, re-board the coach and you will head to the Tri Dharma Sumbernaga Chinese Temple, built around 142 years ago. The temple has many unique ornaments on display and is still used today for religious ceremonies. Your last stop is at a local batik workshop. Batik is a craft for which the area is renowned and the textiles created in this part of Indonesia incorporate a design known as Batik Manggur, which means that mangos and grapes form part of the design. You’ll have an opportunity to purchase some of this fine cloth directly from the artisans, if you like, before you return to the port.
