A compelling place to visit, Kamakura invites the visitor to explore the treasures of the Shinto and Buddhist religions. The Shoguns made Kamakura an important town when it served as their capital from AD 1192 - 1333, but it is the quiet walks and spiritual peace that are its attractions in the 21st century.
The masterpiece among these is at the Koutokuin Temple -- the first stop on your tour. Here you will see the Daibutsu (Great Buddha), which stands 42.5 feet tall and is the second-largest statue of Buddha in Japan. The statue boasts remarkable statistics, having been completed in 1252, cast in bronze and weighing about 121 tons.
A dramatically different view of eastern religion can be seen at the TsurugaokaHachimangu Shrine, dedicated to the god of war.
Enjoy free time at Komachi Street before you drive back to the pier in Yokohama.
Notes: This tour is available only to guests whose cruise does not begin or end in Yokohama. Terrain includes steps at the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Expect crowding at Komachi Street. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Tour order may vary.
