Celebrating Holland America’s Dutch Heritage & 152-Year History

At Holland America, our Dutch heritage is not just part of our name and history, it is alive in every journey we make — from Dutch Day celebrations on every cruise to our tradition of genuine hospitality. In April 2025, Holland America is celebrating a 152-year legacy of sailing and connecting guests to the world and to each other.
Living History
In 1872, Holland America’s first ship, Rotterdam (I), sailed from the Netherlands to New York City, and 150 years later, in 2022, Princess Margriet of the Netherlands christened our newest Rotterdam ship, which features Pinnacle Class luxury and our hallmark exquisite cuisine, superbly appointed staterooms and suites, and world-class entertainment. You can sail Rotterdam around the cerulean seas of the Caribbean or from its namesake port to explore UNESCO World Heritage sites, fairytale fjords, and Viking history in Northern Europe.
From immigrants leaving Europe and seeking a better life in North America to celebrities including Albert Einstein, Katharine Hepburn, and Oprah Winfrey, we take pride in treating every passenger with personable, thoughtful, and sincere hospitality — awarded ‘Best Service’ by Cruise Critic three years in a row. It’s in everyday touches, like crew members who know you by name and remember your favorite drink and the comfort of our signature twice-daily turndown service.
We believe the journey is as important as the destination and invite you to retrace history on your own transatlantic crossing. With multiple Days at Sea, you can fully relax into the art of leisurely travel by pampering yourself in the Spa & Salon, practice your pickleball serve with ocean views, and catch up on reading while lounging poolside. Sail from Boston to Rotterdam to experience the remote and remarkable in the Arctic Circle including Greenland, Iceland, and Norway or cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to the sparkling Mediterranean’s delicious wines and ancient wonders.
Savouring Moments with Dutch Traditions On Board
Whether you’re on a voyage to see glaciers in Alaska, cross the Panama Canal, or explore Australia, you can get a taste of the Netherlands during Dutch Day on all Holland America cruises. Sip premium tea and snack on succulent finger sandwiches and scrumptious desserts like Chocoladebol and Appletaart during our Royal Dutch Tea. Savor delicious contemporary and traditional fare during Dutch Dinner in the Dining Room, such as Fried Dover Sole with lemon butter and Hodge Podge Klapstuk with chateau potatoes.
In the spirit of Koninginnedag (King’s Day), a holiday to celebrate the birthday of the reigning monarch in the Netherlands, you’re invited don your brightest orange attire for the Holland America Orange Party. Dance to live music, and indulge in craft beers, classic cocktails, and Dutch-inspired appetizers. End your day by enjoying the sweet Daelmans Stroopwafel found placed on your pillow.
Holland America has come a long way from transporting millions of tons of cargo, including tulip bulbs, herring, and gin, across the Atlantic. We’ve bloomed into a cruise line that sails to nearly 400 ports across 114 countries on all seven continents.
