What to Pack for a Fall or Spring Cruise to the Mediterranean

Shoulder season — the travel period between a destination’s peak and slow season — is a great time to travel if your schedule allows. Enjoy a cruise through the Mediterranean with fewer visitors than the summer to truly immerse yourself in the culture and feel unhurried while you tour the Colosseum or marvel at the Sagrada Família.

Why Take a Fall or Spring Cruise to the Mediterranean?

Whether this is your first cruise or you’re a seasoned traveler, Holland America offers a variety of Mediterranean cruises to appeal to every interest with a blend of must-see cities and off-the-beaten-path ports. Traveling to the Mediterranean in the shoulder season (April–May and September–November) provides milder temperatures and time to explore the 200+ UNESCO World Heritage sites offered on our itineraries like the historic city of Valletta, Malta or the Acropolis in Athens.

Enjoy more time for leisurely exploration with extended evening calls plus overnights in places like Naples (Pompeii/Amalfi), Barcelona, Piraeus (Athens), and more.

Mediterranean Packing List for Shoulder Season

For any cruise, remember these essentials above all else — pack your passport, travel documents, and any medication in your carry-on luggage so you always have access to them.

Traveling outside of the popular summer months in the Mediterranean brings a new set of packing needs for clothes and accessories. Here’s a list of items to consider packing on your fall or spring cruise.

  • Light layers: Breathable long sleeves, mid-weight sweater, cotton tees, and linen tops. Days can be 65–75°F with cooler evenings.
  • Comfortable pants or shorts: Mix of jeans, lightweight trousers, and even shorts. Some days may be beach-worthy or on the warmer side, so it’s best to be prepared
  • Packable jacket: A light puffer is perfect for windier ports like Santorini or Dubrovnik
  • Scarf or wrap: Adds warmth and can be used to dress up any outfit on board
  • Cruise-casual outfits: Skirts, sundresses, polos, or nice tops for dinner and walking around the ship
  • One dressier outfit: Most Mediterranean cruises have at least one “Dressy Night” for you to show off your best look
  • Orange accessories: Bring your flashiest orange to the Orange Party, a Dutch-inspired celebration on board, at least once per cruise
  • Sun hat: The Mediterranean sun might be strong in the shoulder season
  • Swimsuit: The pools stay open! And some ports are even warm enough for a quick dip.
  • Light rain jacket: This is especially good to have in places like Spain and France
  • Umbrella: Great to have on hand for unexpected fall or spring showers while on shore excursions
  • Walking shoes: For the cobblestone streets in Italy and Greece
  • Sandals: For beach stops or casual onboard wear
  • Sunscreen: Useful even in the fall and spring months
