Holland America Line Extends its Pause of Cruise Operations

Holland America Line Extends its Pause of Cruise Operations

With travel restrictions continuing for the near future due to global health concerns, Holland America Line has decided to extend its pause of global cruise operations and cancel all Alaska, Europe and Canada/New England cruises for 2020.

In addition, Amsterdam will not operate the 79-day Grand Africa Voyage from Boston, Massachusetts, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, that was scheduled to depart on Oct. 3, 2020. Holland America Line had previously cancelled all 2020 Land+Sea Journeys, which combine an Alaska cruise with an overland tour to Denali and the Yukon.

“As we continue to navigate through these unprecedented and challenging times, the best decision right now is to extend our pause in cruise operations into the fall,” said Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line. “While this is very disappointing and we never want to let our guests down, as soon as it makes sense we will be back cruising again, giving our guests the memorable travel experiences they continue to dream about.”

All guests, or their travel advisors, will automatically be notified if their cruise departure has been cancelled.

Guests Automatically Receive Future Cruise Credit
Those with impacted cruises will automatically be cancelled, and all guests will receive a Future Cruise Credit per person as follows:

Paid in Full: Those who had paid in full will receive 125% Future Cruise Credit of the base cruise fare paid to Holland America Line.

Not Paid in Full: Those with bookings not paid in full will receive a Future Cruise Credit of double the amount of the deposit paid for the cruise. The minimum Future Cruise Credit is $100 and the maximum will be an amount up to the base cruise fare paid.

The Future Cruise Credit is valid for 12 months from the date of issue and may be used to book sailings departing through Dec. 31, 2022. All other funds paid to Holland America Line may be transferred to a new booking or will automatically be refunded via the method of payment used to purchase the services.

Full Refund Option Also Available
Guests who prefer a 100% refund of monies paid to Holland America Line can visit the Cancellation Preferences form to indicate this preference no later than June 15, 2020. This includes Holland America Line’s Flight Ease air, Cancellation Protection Plan, Holland America Line pre- or post-cruise hotel packages or transfers, prepaid shore excursions and amenities purchased through Holland America Line, and taxes, fees and port expenses.

Due to the unprecedented volume of bookings impacted by cancellations, Holland America Line asks for guests’ patience and understanding regarding the time needed to work through processing refunds and FCCs.

The above options are not applicable to guests booked on a charter sailing. Other booking and cancellation conditions and policies may apply if the cruise was not booked through Holland America Line. See the terms and conditions at the Cancellation Preferences form for all details.

Recognizing the vital role travel advisors play in the success of the cruise industry, Holland America Line will protect travel advisor commissions on bookings for cancelled cruises that were paid in full and for the total amount of the Future Cruise Credits when their clients rebook.

Holland America Line will continue to monitor the global health situation and evaluate the best time to begin sailing again. Additional details will be shared as they are available.

My husband, Nils Theodore Lillie are 4 star mariners. We are booked on the 30 day Amazon trip leaving Ft Lauderdale, FL in November, 2020. Upon the ship’s return to Ft Lauderdale. We are booked to continue on for the following 2 week Holiday trip into the Panama Canal returning once again to Ft Lauderdale in the first week of January. What is the status of our trips? Our HAL consultant is Marcos.

We were leaving from Venice to Tampa October October 6, 2020 only our final payment was due. Our April 6, 2020 from Ft. Lauderdale all the way to Norway was cancelled and we took future cruise credit and put all the money on the October 6, 2020.
We will call our Personal Travel Consultant at HAL, Jennifer and see what we can do for next year.
I understand the situation and we are HAL STRONG

Enjoyed our cruise from San Diego to Mexico early in January. Agree with your cancelling the 2020 season. Hopefully we’ll be able to sail with you in 2021.

We had an Alaskan cruise scheduled for September 2020. We were on the Panama Canal Cruise (March 8-18) and came home to the pandemic. Thankfully everyone on our ship were healthy. But, because of experiencing this, we talked to Carrie, our Cruise Consultant, on March 27 and determined it was probably for the better to cancel our Alaskan Cruise. This was so we would not be calling her in a month or so to cancel when she would be trying to handle all the cruises that were cancelled in April & May. We cancelled because of the virus. Do we also get the “double cruise credit” offered above?
(We have 2 future cruises already booked – one in Feb. 2021 & one in Oct. 2021. We are exclusive Holland America passengers (never sailed with anyone but you!) and hope to keep it that way.)

This is so unfair! We had to either pay our cruise off in full or cancel for a credit yesterday. The other people we were cruising with had paid in full when booking but were planning on cancelling if you didn’t cancel it.

We had to make our decision yesterday and now you cancel. Its not fair that we don’t get the choice of refund or double the future cruise credit. You knew yesterday that this would happen its not right.

Mariner no. 117601195. Booking no. CD7G5N. 24 day Balitic & Northern Isles Cruise departing July 2, 2020 from Copenhagen. This cruise already cancelled through Cruise Guru to receive FCC to value of deposit minus Cruise Guru booking fee, redeemable if rebooked through them. Are we eligible for the newly announced double value of monies paid? Or can we still claim 100% refund of monies paid as we are in our 70’s and unsure of whether we will be doing future cruises from Australia? Thanks for your time! Lynn Tucker

A real shame that the entire 2020 season is cancelled – but we are looking forward to the 2021 season, optimistically! I enjoy viewing daily the movement of the HAL fleet on cruisemapper.com – and appreciated especially reading Captain Albert’s Blog regarding the day-to-day decisions to come to the aid of ms Zaandam – is there a HAL video/movie in all this?

Thank you HAL, especially the onboard staff, for your excellent work.

Holland America, any update for those of us waiting for refunds on when these will be processed? We have been waiting 5 weeks for a refund for a cruise that was scheduled for 6/7. Now we are hearing well over 90 more days should be expected. Many of us have lost jobs and income…we need this money ASAP! Please release the cruise dates you are currently working on refunds for!!! At least knowing that info will help me to have an idea of how much longer we will be waiting.

  31. Heather Ward May 9, 2020 at 5:16 pm - Reply

I have called Holland a few times about my refund request for our 6/7 cruise…they aren’t telling their employees taking these calls ANYTHING about dates they are working on processing refunds for…those poor employees are SO under prepared for the calls they are receiving! It’s is ridiculous that there is not some organization to how this is being worked, especially since it’s been 90 days already that they have been working thru the refund process! Holland can’t control the pandemic, but they CAN control how they respond to it! They need to worry about future customers and keep communication high right now before they lose us! Preparing their employees is step one in making that happen.

It has been over a month since I requested full refund of deposit for Alaskan cruise that was cancelled. Still no refund. Still no communication. If you want people to EVER cruise with you again, you better shape up or we will not ship out!

I was due to cruise on March 21st. Following a letter from Orlando Ashford offering the ability to cancel, it seemed the most reasonable course of action particularly as we needed to fly from the UK to San Diego start our cruise to Hawaii and Tahiti. In the event, the cruise was cancelled anyway. I am in receipt of a Future Cruise Credit, but am pretty upset to find that later cancelled cruises are being offered a 125% FCC or indeed a Full Refund. I would have hoped to be playing on a level playing field but seemingly this is not the case.

I’ve been waiting since the beginning of March 2020 for my refund for a cancelled March dated cruise. I feel sorry for those still waiting for refunds for cruises at later dates but spare a thought for me waiting now for almost 3 months. At the very least, HAL should release details of the cruises they are currently refunding so we have an idea of what stage they are up to and how much longer we might have to wait.

We don’t expect a response to this comment here, but would like at least to see it displayed:

We are 5 Star Mariners scheduled to sail The 35 Day Voyage of the Vikings to depart Boston on July 18th. This was our dream cruise. HAL encouraged us to pay up front (EZPay) so as not to have such a huge payment when final payment was due. We took your “advice” and you now have more than $22,000. of our money. That is a LOT of money and we want it back NOW. It is unfair, if not illegal, to hold that much money for so long when HAL cancelled our cruise and when you owe it to us. Shame on you! You will lose many LOYAL customers if you continue this practice. Pay us now, please!!

I was on the Westerdam Jan. 16, 2020 to Feb. 14, 2020. We are still waiting for our refund. We spent
5 days in the hotel in Cambodia. We were promise $50.00 a day for food, our flight home and more.
So far we have not received no money or information. I called Guest Services and they haven’t called me back yet. Will try again on Monday.
So good luck to all of you on cancelled cruises.

I know that Holland America line and indeed all the cruise lines are undergoing a terrible time, I especially feel for the crew.

One thing I would like to see, if it is necessary to cancel a cruise that they notify the booked guests earlier . One we were on that the company cancelled people were on planes flying into Fort Lauderdale and got off to find that the cruise had been cancelled that day…..what a mess.

Anyway, good luck to all and keep safe.
