As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, Holland America is launching its America 250 campaign — celebrating a 150-year history deeply woven into the nation’s story. From immigrant voyages to wartime service and the evolution of modern cruising, Holland America’s history mirrors America’s own journey of discovery, resilience, and innovation.

150+ Years of Shared History

Since our founding in 1873, Holland America has been a vital link between continents, carrying generations across the Atlantic. Our first ship, Rotterdam I, sailed into New York, marking the beginning of a transatlantic tradition that shaped both our company and America’s immigrant story.

Holland America’s Role in America’s Immigrant Story

From the 1880s through the 1920s, Holland America carried more than 10% of all steerage immigrants bound for the United States — over a million people seeking new opportunities. Unlike many carriers of the era, Holland America elevated standards of care by serving three hearty meals daily in dedicated dining rooms and by instituting a daily housekeeping protocol, ensuring dignity and comfort during a challenging journey. This commitment helped transform transatlantic travel and positioned the line as a trusted bridge between Europe and America during one of history’s greatest migrations.

Holland America’s History at Ellis Island

As part of Holland America’s 150th anniversary celebration, they unveiled a special exhibit at the Ellis Island History Center in spring 2023, honoring its pivotal role in America’s immigrant story. From 1873 onward, the company transported nearly two million hopeful travelers and, remarkably, 99% of those passengers were cleared for entry, thanks to Holland America’s commitment to health screenings, English lessons, and civics classes that eased the transition to a new life. The exhibit featured original passenger manifests, vintage ship models, and evocative photographs, connecting the brand’s heritage to the enduring narrative of opportunity and resilience at Ellis Island.

Nearly 80 years in Alaska

Holland America has been sharing the wonders of Alaska since 1947 — before it was even a state! For nearly 80 years, Holland America has been a pioneer in showcasing the Great Land’s raw beauty with our innovative guaranteed glacier viewing. We also lead the way in immersive exploration by blending scenic cruising with authentic cultural experiences. Our deep-rooted partnerships with local communities and wildlife conservation organizations, including the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, reflect a lasting commitment to preserving Alaska’s wilderness while enriching every guest’s journey. Today, our land-and-sea cruisetours and exclusive Denali and Yukon experiences continue to set the standard for meaningful travel in this extraordinary region.

Service in Wartime: A History of Duty at Sea

During both World Wars, Holland America transformed its elegant ocean liners into lifelines for the Allied cause. Ships were repurposed as troop and blockade vessels, carrying soldiers and vital supplies across perilous waters. The most famous, Nieuw Amsterdam II, became a powerhouse of wartime logistics — transporting more than 350,000 troops and steaming more than 530,000 nautical miles during World War II. When peace returned, the ship sailed triumphantly back to Rotterdam in 1946, greeted by a jubilant crowd of 600,000, symbolizing resilience and hope after years of global conflict.

A Century of Caribbean Exploration

Holland America will mark 100 years in the Caribbean in 2026, celebrating a commitment that began with our first voyage on February 18, 1926. That pioneer sailing opened the door to warm-water cruising, setting the stage for a century of discovery among sun-soaked islands and vibrant cultures. Today, we honor that heritage with itineraries that blend timeless elegance and authentic experiences — from our award-winning private island, RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay™, to ports rich in history and flavor.

Where Hospitality Meets History and Culture

For generations, Holland America has been the choice of cultural icons — from Albert Einstein and Winston Churchill to Hollywood legends like Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. Their presence aboard our ships reflects a tradition of refined service and timeless elegance that continues to define our brand. More than transportation, our voyages have served as floating salons of ideas, style, and influence — connecting people, cultures, and history across oceans.

Innovation That Continues Today

Holland America’s spirit of progress has never wavered. Between 1992 and 2000, we ushered in a new era of growth by introducing eight ships in just eight years. That momentum continued with the debut of Rotterdam VII in 2021 — our Pinnacle-class flagship that blends cutting-edge design, world-class dining, and immersive entertainment. Each new vessel reflects our enduring commitment to artistry at sea and delivering experiences that redefine modern cruising while honoring our rich heritage.
