About Us

Sustainability

Holland America Line takes our role as stewards of the waters we sail very seriously. Our ships are becoming increasingly more efficient, and our environmental impact—from fuel to food—will be less.

Holland America Line’s sustainability efforts directly support Carnival Corporation’s 2030 sustainability goals and 2050 aspirations in six focus areas, which were developed to align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Food Consumption and Waste Reduction
  • Community Involvement and Support
  • Embracing Cleaner Energy
  • Reducing and Recycling
  • Preserving Water Resources

Emissions Improvement

Holland America Line has set a goal to reduce our carbon emissions by 20% by 2030 and we are on track to achieve this goal.

Less Left Over

We strive to reduce as much solid waste as possible, so there is less left over. Through recycling and waste management practices – and a focus on eliminating single-use plastics – we significantly reduce waste sent to landfills.

Efficient Systems

We are continuously working to improve our operations to make our ships efficient and environmentally friendly – from itinerary planning to technologies that optimize our fuel and engine usage.

Every Drop Counts

Protecting the health of the oceans is fundamental to our business model because every drop counts. Likewise, fresh water is critical to our shipboard operations, and preserving it is a priority. Most of the water we use onboard comes from the sea, which we turn into safe, drinkable water.

Global Fresh Fish Program

In 2022, Holland America Line became the first cruise line to be awarded Certified Seafood International (CSI) (formerly Responsible Fisheries Management) certification for sustainable Alaskan seafood. And, in 2024, we achieved global certification for sustainability from Marine Stewardship Counsel (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). Learn more about our Global Fresh Fish Program
