Panama and its mighty canal are inextricably bound — it is virtually inconceivable that the one could exist without the other. Today, you will discover why so many have dubbed this extraordinary marine highway "the Eighth Wonder of the World" and why few would beg to differ.
Experience the full wonder of the Panama Canal with a partial crossing of the canal by tour boat. Transfer across the isthmus to Gamboa. At the Gatún Yacht Club, board a tour boat for a partial transit of the canal. You'll cruise Gatún Lake — once the largest artificial lake in the world — to the Gaillard Cut, where you'll cross the Continental Divide.
Enter the Pedro Miguel Locks, which lower your vessel 28 feet on its way to the Pacific. Motor across Miraflores Lake to the Miraflores Locks, which lower your tour boat the final 56 feet, to the level of the Pacific Ocean.
Your cruise ends at the port of Balboa in Panama City, where you will board an air-conditioned motorcoach for the return trip to the ship in Colón .
Notes:
There are no wheelchair-accessible restrooms on the boat. Tours that board the ferry at the Gamboa Dredging Division Pier pass through the Gaillard Cut; tours that board the ferry at Cucaracha Pier pass through approximately 10% of the Gaillard Cut. Which pier is used is determined by the Panama Canal authorities on the day. Water levels in the locks are impacted by rain; the tour may be extended during drier seasons; tour duration varies accordingly, and your patience with any delays is appreciated. The panoramic drive to the ship from Panama City at the Pacific end of the Canal to Colón at the Atlantic end takes approximately 1¼ hours on a new four-lane highway.
