This transfer may suit you if you would like to explore on your own. It consists of a motorcoach a ride from the ship to the railway station in Civitavecchia and a 60-minute train ride to Termini Station. The train coach escort will advise you of the pick-up time for the return journey. You will have approximately 6 hours to shop and explore independently in the Vatican and Rome. A city map is provided, and public transportation in Rome is readily available.
Notes:
Guide service, taxi transfers, entrance fees and lunch are not included in the transfer price. It is your responsibility to be at the meeting point at the given return time. An English-speaking escort will be aboard the transfer motorcoach and the train to answer questions en route. Train travel time to the Vatican is approximately one hour each way. Bring local currency for attractions, meals and shopping, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. This tour is available only to guests whose cruise does not begin or end in Civitavecchia. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and many steps, including approximately 50 steps from the platform at St Peter's Station to the exit. There is no elevator. Participants must be able to board the coach for the initial transfer. St Peter's Basilica can close for security reasons at any time without notice; visitors are required to check large bags, video cameras and bottled water. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts and capri-length pants are not allowed. Expect crowds, lines, and delays at most venues. Ongoing restoration work is often being carried out at Rome's foremost attractions. Most shops are closed on Sundays.
Guests failing to meet escort at designated time and location must arrange their own transportation back to the ship.
Depending on local conditions and in case of any technical inconvenience, the train ride to Rome will be substituted with coach transportation.
In 2025, Rome will be celebrating The Jubilee, also known as the Holy Year. Due to this significant event in the Catholic Church an abundance of tourists and pilgrims from across the world are expected to visit Rome and there will be many events taking place at St. Peter’s Basilica through the year with high possibility that the Basilica will close to visitors (or allow only pilgrims). Should the Basilica be open, long queues to access should be expected and time at disposal might not be enough to access. Entrance to St. Peter’s Basilica is not guaranteed. Conservative attire required to access St. Peter’s Basilica: no exposed shoulders for both women & men.
Due to this significant event taking place in Rome in 2025, overcrowdings and traffic congestions should be expected.
Please note that the Trevi Fountain may be overcrowded with excessive lines. Up close views of the fountain are not guaranteed.
