A 40-minute motorcoach drive from port brings you to Opatija. Situated on the slopes of Mount Ucka and overlooking the coastline of Kvarner Bay, Opatija is a gem of a resort town nestled in the heart of the Kvarner Riviera. It seamlessly blends its old-world charm with its status as an elegant vacation destination for Europe's aristocrats and artists. View this playground of the rich and famous on a narrated panoramic drive that takes you past the grand hotels, lush public gardens and taffy-colored villas of Opatija.
Then, you'll leave the coach for a one-hour guided walking tour that traverses the Lungomare -- a seven-mile coastal promenade lined with luxurious villas. Look for the Maiden with the Seagull statue -- a popular symbol of Opatija's connection to the sea.
Photograph a collage of highlights, including the expansive gardens of Villa Angiolina. Constructed in 1844, this was one of the area's first tourist resorts.
Lunch is served at a local hotel.
Explore Opatija on your own this afternoon. You have about 1½ hours of free time for browsing among the handmade souvenirs sold along the seaside promenade. You may wish to visit the Operetta -- one of the prettiest shopping complexes in Croatia -- the Museum of Croatian Tourism, the early 15th-century St Jacob's Church, or Volosko, a neighboring fishing village.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience.
