On Friday, May 16, 2025, Holland America Line and Flynn Cruiseport Boston welcomed a group of hospitality students from Greater Lowell Technical High School aboard Zuiderdam for a behind-the-scenes look at careers in the maritime and cruise industry.
The juniors and seniors, all part of the school’s hospitality program, were given a unique opportunity to see firsthand how a world-class cruise ship operates. For many, it was their first time stepping aboard a cruise ship — making the experience even more impactful.
Their visit began with a guided tour of Zuiderdam’s public spaces, including live music venues, the World Stage theater, restaurants and bars, the library, and the spa and fitness center.
The experience continued behind the scenes where students explored the Engine Control Room, Galley, and Bridge — areas rarely seen by guests. Along the way, they met with engineers who keep the ship running smoothly, culinary professionals who prepare thousands of meals each day, and the staff captain, who offered a glimpse into the complexities of navigating a vessel at sea. Students also learned about the specialized training required for each role and the diverse career paths available within every department, from entry-level positions to leadership opportunities.
The day concluded with lunch at the Lido Market buffet, where students sampled dishes prepared by Holland America Line’s culinary team. The immersive experience on board highlighted the diverse career paths available at sea and brought the Holland America Line brand to life for these students.
