The 2026 Nenana Ice Classic ended May 4 when the contest’s iconic wooden tripod broke through the ice on Alaska’s Tanana River at 6:58 p.m. AKST, marking the official conclusion of the annual guessing game.
Held for more than a century, the Nenana Ice Classic invites participants to predict the exact date and time the river ice will shift enough to tip the tripod that was placed on the ice in early March. The event is closely followed across Alaska each spring as a marker of seasonal change and a longstanding community tradition.
“For more than 100 years, the Nenana Ice Classic has been an Alaska tradition, and we’re proud to help share that tradition beyond its borders,” said Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer for Holland America Line and Seabourn. “We seek opportunities that allow people to connect authentically with Alaska year-round.”
Holland America Line, a sponsor of the Nenana Ice Classic, supported the event as part of its long-standing connection to Alaska and its communities. The contest reflects the shared anticipation that surrounds Alaska’s transition from winter to spring.
Organizers announced Joe Dinkins and Marie Thies of Fairbanks, Alaska, as the 2026 jackpot winners. The two winners will split the jackpot of $144,749, with each receiving gross winnings of $72,374.50, according to the Nenana Ice Classic.
Holland America Line has supported Alaska traditions and community initiatives for nearly 80 years and continues to participate in events that highlight the state’s history and culture.
