Where to See the Northern Lights in Norway

The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, are a natural light display in the Earth's sky caused by colliding solar particles and pressure into the earth’s magnetic field. They are mostly seen in northern parts of the world making Norway one of the best places to catch the show.

The Northern Lights can be seen in much of Norway from late autumn to early spring, but there are a few cities and vantage points that can offer a truly unique view and experience.

Tromso

Tromso is located on an island above the Arctic Circle that is renowned as one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in the entire world. The peak of the Fjellheisen Mountain comes with both spectacular city views and the opportunity to see the lights in all their glory. Spend five or more days in the city from September to April and you have a good chance of seeing the northern lights at least once.

Kirkenes

Historically, the tiny Arctic town of Kirkenes in northeast Norway close to the Russian border has around 200 northern lights nights every single year. The remote area has little light pollution and sits in the perfect location to see the lights at their most vibrant. There are plenty of tours and cruises that travel to the area to give visitors the best chance of seeing the northern lights, so book one ahead of time that fits your itinerary.

Narvik

Narvik is located directly below the Aurora Oval (or Aurora Zone) which is a huge ring above the earth’s geomagnetic north pole. It changes in shape and size but remains constant and can help predict where the Northern Lights will be visible on any given night. Narvik is in the perfect location to see the Northern Lights and they even have a train route designed to “chase” the lights across the night sky away from light pollution of big cities.

Lofoten

Lofoten is an archipelago known for the mountain scenery and picturesque villages. It’s also the perfect vantage point for viewing the northern lights in all directions. The mountain peaks even make it possible to catch glimpses of the lights on cloudy nights.

Generally, the sky is too bright in the summer months to see the Northern Lights, but on the Lofoten Islands, this period is brief. It’s possible to see the lights from late August all the way until mid-April—so if you’re looking to visit Norway during slightly warmer temperatures, Lofoten can offer an opportunity to still see the Northern Lights while you’re there.

Svalbard

Located between mainland Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is another archipelago with ideal conditions for northern light activity. Svalbard experiences “polar night” which means there is no daylight for approximately 65 days of the year from mid-November to mid-to-late-January. Naturally, this means there are more hours of the day where the Northern Lights could potentially be visible.

Bodo

Located in Salten region, Bodo has city vibes in a small package. Bodo isn’t far from Rønvikfjellit Mountain, which is a popular place to find an open view of the sky for checking out the northern lights. Driving along the north side of the city, there are beaches, hiking spots and viewpoints that all offer a clear view of the Northern Lights. If you want to experience Norwegian culture mixed with opportunities to see the lights, Bodo offers the variety you’re looking for.
