Jurmala's first full-fledged spa facility opened in 1838 at the request of Russian Czar Nicholas I, but nobles from Riga enjoyed the area's pristine white sandy beaches as early as the 17th century. The town's popularity soared when the railroad came through in the late 19th century. Spas, wellness centers, hotels and homes designed in Art Nouveau style were built in and around Jurmala, many of which still stand today as a testament to its status as a favorite destination.
Discover the legacy of this picturesque seaside village for yourself when you board an air-conditioned motorcoach and travel along the coastline west of Riga. Densely forested areas of thick green trees stand in stark contrast to the sugar-white beaches and stunning views of the Gulf of Riga.
Your guide will offer a fascinating commentary on Jurmala's history and architecture. A panoramic drive through Jurmala showcases the quiet, narrow streets. Modern mansions and charming wooden homes date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many adorned with elaborate flowerbeds.
Follow your guide on a walking tour along the seashore and up Jomas Street -- the oldest street in Jurmala and home to shops, beer gardens and cafés. Enjoy some free time to discover this coastal gem on your own.
Re-board your motorcoach for the scenic trip back to the ship.
Notes:
Some of the walking is along the beach and on a sandy surfaces. There are steps to the beach. Jurmala town and Jomas pedestrian street are paved. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
