Head out by motorcoach to the excavated city of Herculaneum -- known to the Italians as Ercolano. The upper-class Romans built their beautiful villas and maintained luxurious properties in Herculaneum -- most of them overlooking the sea.
Explore on foot with your guide, who will explain how why Herculaneum is so remarkably intact compared to Pompeii. Oddly, Herculaneum's destruction when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 preserved the city rather than wiping it out. This means that marvelous inlaid marble floors, mosaics, paintings, and carbonized wood are exposed for viewing.
Time permitting, you'll stop at a local cameo factory before you return to the ship.
