Leaving the harbor of Marseille, your first stop will be at the city of Arles.
A walk through the Old Town's narrow streets reveals St Trophime Church -- a masterpiece of the late Provençal Romanesque style. Continue past the Town Hall, rebuilt in 1673 with an obelisk from Arles' Roman circus. At Forum Square, you'll see the center of town -- a meeting point over the centuries for famous artists, including Vincent Van Gogh. You'll also walk to the amphitheater dating back to the days when the Romans occupied Arles.
Stop at a restaurant in Arles for a typical Provencal lunch.
Re-board your coach for a drive through the Provencal countryside to the village of Les Baux.
In the Old Town of Les Baux, located high atop a rocky spur, a fortified castle lies in ruins and towers over small provincial houses. Enjoy a walking tour through the village, with some free time afterward to explore on your own.
Travel time to Arles is approximately 75 minutes, and the drive from Les Baux back to Marseille is also about 75 minutes. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shopping is limited outside of the main summer season.
