The Casa Zapata in Barumini is a wonderful facility offering three museums in one -- an archaeological museum, a history museum, and an ethnographic museum. The three collections are housed within the complex of a fine mansion -- the Palazzo Zapata. This former manor house was built in the 16th century when the noble Zapata family established its baronial residence in Barumini. It is one of just a handful of 17th-century manor houses in Sardinia. A series of ramps and catwalks makes it easy to follow your guide on a walk over the Nuraghe -- megalithic (Stone Age) fortifications -- while learning the secrets of ancient Sardinian life.
A short drive away, you enter a completely different world -- that of an entirely bio-integral winery. Bio-integration in this context includes finding ways to control pests, weeds, etc, that are not only non-toxic and environmentally friendly, but where the means of doing so is generated from the very environment in which the problem resides. It is an extension of ethical agriculture, viewed by many as an essential prerequisite for sustainability. At Olinas Estate, enjoy a wine tasting together with a Sardinian snack of local cheeses, traditional pane carasau bread, honey, and olive oil.
You will return to Cagliari afterward.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes.
