Here's your chance to learn to scuba dive and see a shipwreck -- the ideal introduction to scuba for first-time divers. This experience is part of the Discover Scuba Diving program developed by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) for people who would like to try scuba diving but have not taken the full certification course.
Board a USCG-certified 45-foot Corinthian boat for a ride to the Buck Island Marine Sanctuary. Here, you will participate in the Discover Scuba Diving introductory course. The course consists of three simple steps.
First, a brief orientation is led by a certified scuba instructor. Then, you'll have your first experience of scuba in a pool-like body of water. Finally, under the careful supervision of the certified instructor, first-time divers go on an actual scuba dive in calm water over a shipwreck. No prior experience is necessary to participate.
Notes:
Minimum age is 16 years, accompanied by a parent or guardian in the water. Participants must know how to swim and be comfortable in the water. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen, light clothing to act as a full cover-up for further protection from the sun, and a hat. Guests with a heart condition, epilepsy, diabetes or asthma are not allowed to participate. You must fill out a medical questionnaire, which will be reviewed by the tour operator. Whether or not the operator allows you to participate will depend upon the information provided. To avoid disappointment, please review the medical requirements for diving in advance so that you can ask your physician about clearing any medical issues in writing with a valid medical certificate. Medical certificates are not available from the physician on board the ship. Samples of typical medical questionnaires can be found on the websites of the major dive associations, such as PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) and NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors). Wetsuits are available for rental at US$15 per person.
