You may have already enjoyed the wonderful flavors of West Indian cooking, but do you know the actual ingredients of the dishes or their history? Whether you are a seasoned cook or just a lover of tasty cuisine, this cooking demonstration will appeal to you.
A short drive brings you to Fairview Great House & Botanic Garden. Tantalize your taste buds as you enjoy regional dishes prepared before your eyes. As ingredients are added, the historian/cook will recount tales about the history of the regional foods, share old and new recipes, and talk about the wonderful development of dishes that use Old and New World foods with African, European and Indian cooking methods. Enjoy sampling the dishes along with a homemade beverage.
Browse among the locally-made handicrafts available for purchase, or tour the Great House. The main floor of the Great House is furnished in authentic colonial style. The dining room, the living room and a gentleman's study are on display. Upstairs you will find the master bedroom with a large veranda offering a panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea, Southeast Peninsula, and Nevis -- St Kitts' sister island.
In the historical information room, learn more about life on the island in colonial times and the process undertaken to fully restore this historic gem.
Feel free to wander through the different areas of the beautifully landscaped 2.5-acre botanic garden at your leisure, and take home a copy of the recipes prepared for you today.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited in the garden; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
