The cuisine of Puerto Rico is among the most flavorful in the world because its roots lie in the cooking traditions and practices of Spain, Africa and the Taíno Natives.
Discover the magic of the cocina criolla (Creole kitchen) and spice up your day during this exciting culinary experience, where you will taste the rich flavors of Puerto Rico.
Set out from the Old San Juan pier on a walking tour that will acquaint you with the history of the city and detail of Puerto Rican culture. Your guide will lead you through or past important historical sites such as the San Juan Gate, the Princess Pathway and Prison, the Roots Fountain, the Museum of Doña Fela, the Rogativa statue, Plaza de Armas and the San Juan Cathedral.
You will also pass through the shopping district these ancient streets provide, selling Puerto Rican coffee, crafts, jams and spices.
Next up -- the highlight of the tour. Head to the Mofongo & Mojito culinary demo and dining experience set in a beautiful local restaurant with a charming colonial atmosphere. This is the ideal place to appreciate Latin flavors. The staff welcomes you with delicious Puerto Rican hors d'oeuvres, and the renowned chef will demonstrate how to create the famous mofongo -- a must-try for first-time visitors claiming they have sampled the local fare. For locals, it represents a craving to be satisfied early and often. Mofongo is essentially a mashed mound of plantains or cassava into which a combination of meat or vegetables is added. Savor every bite, and you're halfway to becoming an honorary Puerto Rican when you enjoy a three-course meal that includes the fruits of your labor.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, light clothing, a hat and sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Participants must be able to walk over cobblestone streets for approximately 1.5 miles. The restaurant venue may include a flight of stairs. Order of events may vary.
