This tour, requiring minimal walking, offers an enjoyable overview of the monuments and historical sites of Santo Domingo's famed Old Town, as well as the modern city.
Board air-conditioned transportation at the pier and cross the Ozama River en route to the Columbus Lighthouse -- an architectural wonder built to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Discovery. This is also the final resting place of Admiral Christopher Columbus.
Drive west to the colonial quarter of Santo Domingo to admire cobblestone streets and Spanish architecture. The many impressive 15th-century buildings here include palatial homes and majestic churches that reflect the architectural style of the late medieval period.
Take some photos of the striking palace where the son of Christopher Columbus lived.
You will pass the oldest cathedral in the New World -- Santa Maria la Menor -- a prime example of Spanish Renaissance architecture. Watch for the Plaza de la Cultura, one of the city's most important cultural centers.
On your way back to the pier, you'll travel through the economic center of the new city, along the main boulevard, and past the metropolitan zone.
