Dunn's River Falls is believed to be the site of the famous Battle of Las Chorreras, fought in 1657 between the Spaniards and the English. At stake was possession of the island of Jamaica. The English won, and the course of history was set. Under British rule, Las Chorreras was first owned by Charles Pryce. It later became part of the 276-acre Belmont property and was acquired by the Jamaican Government in 1972 to develop recreational and park facilities.

Today, Dunn’s River Falls can best be described as a living and growing phenomenon -- the waterfall continuously erodes and deposits travertine rock -- resulting from calcium carbonate in the river. The small dome-shaped cataracts (falls) are usually associated with thermal spring activity found in limestone caves.

Experience the thrill of climbing the waterfall in a human chain manned by experienced guides. Pause at the ‘massage parlor’ and experience the soothing effects of the water as it cascades over the rocks and down to the sea. Less adventurous folks can view the activities of the intrepid from the vantage point of the terrace or the viewing deck. Enjoy nature’s gifts as you lose yourself in the lush tropical foliage of ferns, bamboos, ginger lilies, crotons, orchids, a variety of palms and breadfruit trees.

Notes:

Minimum height is 3 feet. Minimum age is 3 years. Minimum age to climb the falls is 5 years. Dunn's River Falls are slippery -- pregnant women and guests with heart, neck, back or knee conditions should not attempt to climb them. Jumping from the falls is not permitted. Due to the falls' popularity, you may encounter long lines at the entrance and crowds once inside the falls area. Lockers are available at the falls for a nominal fee. Rubber-soled, closed-toe shoes are required -- aqua shoes can be purchased from your tour guide or bring yours with you. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen, light clothing to act as a full cover-up for further protection from the sun, and a hat. Leave valuables (such as jewelry) in a secure location on board the ship.
