Head east from the pier towards Montego Bay, where you'll get acquainted with the city's foremost landmarks and learn of their history. You will visit the century-old St James Parish Church, whose exterior is rather careworn. Inside, don't miss the two monuments by noted 18th-century sculptor John Bacon and the elaborate stained-glass window installed in 1911. The wall plaques pay homage to important figures in the history of Montego Bay.
Travel through the hilly outskirts of Montego Bay to the Mt Olive Basic School, where you will interact with the children. Open your heart to enjoy beautiful Jamaican folk songs and poems -- a thrilling encounter in its own right.
Enjoy a drink of fresh coconut water on a nearby tropical plantation and take a guided nature walk. Sample local fruits in season and see an abundance of tropical vegetation and a variety of plants and flowers. You'll learn how the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is grown -- its roots lie firmly in the past -- and sample what the locals claim is the best coffee in the world. Watch for different bird species and meet some farm animals. Your guide will tell you about some traditional herbal remedies used throughout Jamaica.
At lunch, savor an authentic Jamaican jerk dish along with other National dishes -- Ackee and Saltfish. After a taste of local liqueur, you might be willing to sway to the Reggae music. Shop in the gift area for locally made souvenir items.
A full-on local experience, this day out promises a memorable taste of native Jamaica.
Notes:
Mt Olive Basic School is closed on Sundays; the Blossom Gardens Childcare Facility will be substituted.
