Today offers a chance to give back to the sea, which has provided access to so many beautiful, fun experiences on your cruise. You'll join a group of local marine biologists whose goal is to restore the local coral reefs. Your participation helps support the Coral Farms program, allowing the Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration organization to continue its efforts to replenish coral reefs and educate and empower others to take care of our oceans. Coral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems on the planet.
Begin your day as a reef expert introduces you to the facts about coral reproduction and coral restoration. Your class includes an up-close look at coral spawning and reproduction at a shoreside aquarium. A hands-on task has you assisting with coral-fragment planting. Your efforts foster a meaningful relationship between visitors and the community, celebrating marine life and protecting the environment. You might also participate in beach clean-up activities, depending on the needs of the day.
Next, snorkel through the coral gardens to see coral transplanting, or coral gathering and identification. Rinse off and relax on the beach -- a restaurant and bar sell great local food and drinks (at your own expense).
Notes:
Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel. The National Marine Park of Cozumel forbids the use of chemical sun protection if entering the water. Only UV protective clothing (rash guard) is permitted for further protection from the sun, and a hat. Minimum age is 8 years.
