Discover Oviedo Lake on this tranquil outing by boat. You'll begin with a 60-minute transfer from a dry desert with sparse vegetation to a vibrant and green landscape in the province of Pedernales. Here, the mesmerizing lake is a maze of mangroves, natural views, and pristine waters -- a birdwatcher's paradise.
Board a picturesque boat known locally as a yola and set off to explore the lush mangroves, palm forests, and hidden beaches of Oviedo Lake. One of the best places for waterfowl and lowland bird-watching in the country, it boasts about 150 species, from gulls and pelicans to elegant herons. With binoculars (provided), you'll appreciate the intricate details of each species as they feed, preen, or take to the skies. Watch for iguanas climbing the trees or endemic hawksbill turtles. The true stars of the show are the majestic flamingos scattered about in their vibrant hues. Some visitors like to cover themselves in the therapeutic, mineral-rich mud along the shoreline -- feel free to be one of them!
Purchase freshly-brewed Dominican coffee and diverse snacks from local vendors (at your own expense) before you head back to the pier.
Notes:
Bring insect repellent. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing for mud bathing; bring a towel, reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen (no other kind is allowed), light clothing to act as a full cover-up for further protection from the sun, and a hat. Life jackets are provided and must be worn. Tour requires walking approximately 250 yards. Walkers can be accommodated; wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. Mud bathing is optional. The opaque, sandy, greenish shade of the lagoon is due to its high salinity and the combination of groundwater and seawater and may vary due to environmental conditions. Maximum weight is 260 lbs (127 kg). Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars.
