Mad about monkeys? This is the right outing for you! Visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary to experience Belize's rich cultural heritage and incredible wildlife in one excursion.
Belize's native black howler monkeys are locally referred to as "baboons," but taxonomically they are actually monkeys, and today, you'll meet them and observe their endearing and entertaining ways. A local guide takes you deep behind the scenes to learn the history of the sanctuary and see exhibits on howler monkeys and other wildlife. On a guided nature walk, you'll encounter the resident troupe of black howler monkeys. Watch them firsthand, take in the beauty of your surroundings, and learn about traditional rain forest plants and medicine.
A short transfer brings you to the nearby village of Burrell Boom, founded in the 18th century. Its name derives from the iron-chain river booms used to trap harvested mahogany logs. A delicious lunch is served alongside the Belize River.
Visit the self-proclaimed "best little zoo in the world." The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center exhibits more than 200 animals, including 45 native species orphaned, rescued, born at the zoo, rehabilitated, or sent from other zoological institutions. The mission is to promote an understanding of why wild habitat protection is so important. A non-governmental, non-profit organization, the Belize Zoo is the country's first fully-accessible nature destination and is focused on wildlife rehabilitation.
