Few cruise ship guests visit Washington National Park due to its limited capacity and remote location. You're one of the lucky ones.
Begin with a short drive through Bonaire's quaint capital -- Kralendijk. Colonial buildings combined with modern architecture paint the picture of today's Bonaire. Head toward the hills, and the rough eastern coastline, where the landscape is packed full of cacti, and waves crash and spurt jets of water into the air.
At the entrance to the National Park, visit the Natural History Plantation Museum and the Open-Air Museum for a peek into Bonaire's heritage.
Now it's time to head off-road. The park is home to many species of cactus, herds of wild donkeys, goats, friendly iguanas and more than 180 species of bird. Bumpy terrain winds through the park to salt lakes, sand dunes, a blowhole and a beautiful hidden beach cove. Only flocks of flamingos or the spray of crashing waves interrupt the serenity of this landscape.
After a half-day of exploring the park, your tour winds down with a scenic drive back to the ship.
Notes:
Minimum age is 6 years. Ride will be bumpy; not advisable for guests who are pregnant or have a back or neck condition.
