Santiago de los Caballeros, founded in 1495 during the first wave of European colonization of the New World, is the second-largest city in Dominican Republic. It is also dubbed the Heart of the Dominican Republic, as it sits in the country's geographical center. Santiago is a very active and productive city with vibrant restaurants, culture, shops and nightlife, and its fertile hinterland is the cradle of Dominican tobacco, coffee, cocoa and sugarcane growing.
Visit the oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic -- La Aurora -- to see how skilled craftsmen and -women produce high-quality cigars. The process is as complex as it is fascinating.
At the Centro León Cultural Center, check out the valuable anthropological, archaeological, and ethnological collections related to Dominican culture.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant.
On the way back to the pier, visit the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration -- dedicated to the heroes of the Dominican Restoration War (1863-1865) between colonist and Spanish forces.
Notes:
Tour does not operate on weekends or holidays. Minimum age is 18 years. Guests wishing to buy cigars at the Aurora Factory must show ID (passport or driver's license). Tour sequence may vary.
