Santiago de los Caballeros, founded in 1495, is the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic. It is also dubbed 'the heart of the Dominican Republic,' as it sits in the country's geographical center. Santiago is a busy city with a vibrant food, retail, nightlife and culture scene. The fertile hinterland is the cradle of farming for Dominican tobacco, coffee, cocoa and sugarcane.
Visit La Aurora -- the oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic -- to see how skilled craftsmen and -women produce the high-quality cigars for which this country is quite famous.
You'll also stop at the Centro León Cultural Center to examine its valuable anthropological, archaeological and ethnological collections relating to Dominican culture and history.
