Head to the historically and culturally rich city of Puerto Plata. This is your opportunity to walk through the city center. Learn about the late 19th- and early 20th-century Victorian-style architecture, with its pastel colors and gingerbread motifs.
Explore the La Confluencia Taino's Museum to understand the island's original inhabits and their legacy in the Caribbean. Learn about their lifestyle from a collection of Native vessels, utensils and tools.
Next, visit a true tropical oasis. Casa Azucar is a family-owned Republican-style house -- the home and studio of plastic artist Rafi Vasquez. In the tropical garden, learn about growing cacao, see the seed house, and appreciate the centennial native trees, plants and orchids.
Lunch is at a local restaurant is followed by a Macorix rum tasting experience and organic chocolate.
