Discover the heart of Dominican Republic through its intense flavors.
Travel by comfortable, air-conditioned coach to one of the most colorful Old Town precincts in the Caribbean. Savor the colonial vibe and history of Old Puerto Plata, most recently rebuilt in 1865. You'll stroll along narrow cobblestone streets, listen to the history behind the Pink Promenade, and take beautiful pictures at Plaza Independencia. Across the Square, take note of the iconic Cathedral and walk along vibrant Umbrella Street.
Now, it's time to learn about the world of handmade cigars. With a visit to the La Aurora Cigar Experience, you'll observe the process of creating this secondary export product, from seeding all the way through to the finished product -- a fine handcrafted cigar.
A true tropical oasis, Casa Azucar is a family-owned Republican-style house dating back to 1927. It is the home of renowned plastic artist Rafi Vasquez and is also his studio. Stroll about the tropical garden and learn about cacao-growing traditions and techniques. You will see cacao plants and the dried-seed house. Look up, and you'll spot centennial native trees among the many plants and orchids growing here.
Finally, sit down to a typical Dominican Republic lunch, with a tasting of Macorix Rum paired with the finest organic chocolate .
