6 Tips for a Flawless Cruise Disembarkation

Three bags, an orange suitcase, a striped bag, and a blue suitcase gathered together on a tile floor with the text: 6 Tips for a Flawless Cruise Disembarkation.

As Shakespeare once wrote, “parting is such sweet sorrow.” The final day of your cruise is often a bittersweet one as you leave your home away from home, but it doesn’t have to be stressful.

We’ve rounded up six tips for an easy and safe disembarkation, so you can focus on enjoying your last few hours on board.

Disembarkation Process

You’ve already learned about boarding a cruise ship thanks to our helpful embarkation tips, now familiarize yourself with disembarkation day before your journey home.

A few things you should consider:

  • Plan ahead! Your time in port and customs can vary widely, so leave enough time on the day of disembarkation and make sure your group is on the same page.
  • Compare self-assist with standard luggage collection and make your decision a few days before arrival:
    • Self-Assist: Best for guests with early connections who are able to handle their own luggage. If you opt for self-disembarkation, you can leave the ship as soon as disembarkation starts
    • Standard Process: Luggage is picked up by our team members the night before disembarkation, and you leave at your assigned time

Please note: If you choose the standard process for your luggage, you will need to put your baggage outside of your stateroom the night before. Please do not place your luggage over the emergency lighting. All luggage tags should be affixed to your baggage since the tags also include your departing flight information.

Top Tips for a Smooth Cruise Exit

Tip #1: Leave yourself with plenty of time

We recommend a generous buffer of a few hours between your scheduled disembarkation time and any onward flights or train departures. This leaves you time to move through customs if necessary and retrieve your luggage without feeling rushed.

Tip #2: Consider pre-booking a transfer

In many of our ports, taxi lines can be long, and the distance to private transportation is lengthy. We recommend pre-booking professional or group transfers offered through Holland America. Many of our services provide a wait-and-hold period if disembarkation is delayed.

Before disembarkation day, confirm all your booking details, meeting points, times, and who to contact if you are running late.

Tip #3: Have a relaxing last cruise night

We know goodbyes are hard, but ensuring your final night on board is calm and relaxing makes for an enjoyable finale to your trip. Pack your luggage early so you can enjoy a stress-free evening to grab your favorite after-dinner cocktail on board or enjoy one last night of entertainment at the World Stage or our music venues.

  • Pack essentials in a small carry-on and not your tagged luggage. Items such as your ID, medication, valuables, ship key card, and a change of clothes are important to keep on hand
  • Before heading out to dinner, confirm your documentation is organized and review your plan for the next morning
  • Plus, don’t forget to exchange contact information with new friends you met on board

Tip #4: Show up for breakfast early on disembarkation day

On your final day, the Main Dining Room and Lido deck will serve breakfast but expect it to be busier than usual. Many guests will be dining at the same time to ensure an on-time disembarkation.

Tip #5: Pay close attention to announcements

If you’re not part of the self-assist luggage group, pay attention to the announcements — your disembarkation group will have a scheduled time.

Tip #6: Locate waiting areas for taxis and transfers

Once you disembark, the port will be busy. Pay attention to signs and directions on where taxis and airport transfers will be waiting so you can easily move to your next destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I minimize waiting times during disembarkation?

It’s important to follow all instructions from the ship’s crew, arrive at your assigned disembarkation time, and keep your documents, including your ship key card handy to move through customs efficiently. This keeps things moving so everyone can disembark in a timely manner.

Why is it important to allow extra time between disembarkation and flights?

No one likes rushed mornings. Disembarkation is usually completed within two to four hours after the ship’s arrival. Allowing extra time helps you and your group account for unpredictable customs processing or port delays, reducing the risk of missing your onward flight and ensuring you arrive at your destination on time.

How should I pack for disembarkation day?

Keep your most important items easily accessible. Pack essentials such as your passport, travel documents, medications, valuables, and a change of clothes in your carry-on bag for disembarkation morning.

Using our tips will help you have a smooth, stress-free disembarkation. This is not an official goodbye — just a see you later! We can’t wait to welcome you back on your next Holland America cruise.
