Once a Cook, Always a Cook
We have a guest on board Veendam who was a cook on the ss Nieuw Amsterdam in 1956. He even kept his I-95 and his seaman book. When we found out, we organized a chef’s jacket, had it signed by the captain, staff captain, myself, the chef and the culinary operations manager. Than we took him to the kitchen, presented him the jacket and took some photos. A very emotional moment for him as you can imagine.
Bert van Mackelenbergh is Veendam’s hotel director.

That is amazing. Love seeing stuff like this!
I sailed with my cousin to London on the Nieuw Amsterdam in July 1964. We were 20 and had a tiny room. No bath or toilet in the room. They were down the hall. It was quite an experience, very different from cruising today.
