Zuiderdam: Where Heritage Meets Evolution

Every voyage has a starting point. For Holland America’s Vista Class fleet, that starting point has a name: Zuiderdam.

The first Vista Class ship delivered to the fleet, Zuiderdam arrived in 2002 as a vision for the next generation of cruise ships. Her ocean view-forward design, expansive verandahs, and “perfectly sized” methodology influenced every Holland America ship built since and the standard that drives our identity today.

Now, more than two decades later, Holland America Evolution brings the story full circle — back to the ship where our modern story began.

Zuiderdam didn’t just arrive as another addition to a fleet. Zuiderdam was the largest vessel Holland America had ever built when she entered service in December 2002, and her design was a deliberate break from what came before: more natural light, dramatically more verandah accommodations, and expansive public spaces that established what “perfectly sized” would come to mean.

For her official christening, Zuiderdam was named on American soil at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The location choice was a symbol of unity during an uncertain time, as was the choice of Godmother, media icon Joan Lunden, longtime co-host of Good Morning America. As the face of morning television for nearly two decades, Lunden was a welcome and familiar presence in living rooms across the country. Choosing such a recognizable figure as godmother, in North America, reflected Holland America’s growing prominence on the continent and the new audience the Vista Class was built to serve.

Zuiderdam’s name follows a tradition as old as Holland America itself. “Zuider” is the Dutch word for south — and like her Vista Class sisters, she takes her name from one of the four cardinal compass points, a nod to the seafaring heritage that has guided Holland America since 1873. Every voyage begins by setting a course. Hers has pointed toward nearly every corner of the globe.

Over more than two decades at sea, Zuiderdam has sailed the glaciers of Alaska, the fjords of Northern Europe, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, South America, Hawaii, Australia, Asia, and the entire globe on Grand World Voyages. Her ability to move seamlessly between iconic seasonal destinations and Legendary Voyages has made her one of Holland America’s most versatile — and most well-traveled — ships.

Today Evolution returns to where the Vista Class story began. The ship that introduced the standard is now the ship that continues to elevate it.

Zuiderdam debuts her Evolution transformation in March 2028 with reimagined public spaces, refreshed staterooms, new Pinnacle Class-inspired experiences, and new suite categories throughout — including Vista Suites, Bridgeview Suites with sweeping ocean views, and Solo Verandahs purpose-built for independent travelers. She will also be home to the beloved Grand Dutch Café.
