Examine up close a collection of Japanese cultural treasures – bonsai, kimono and origami.
What is bonsai? Visit the Shunka-en Bonsai Museum to find out why the correct answer is not simply "small plants and trees." Why is Bonsai so deeply ingrained in Japanese culture? It may surprise you to learn that it was originally a Chinese concept. Today, this private museum hosts a collection of 1,000 bonsai-related artifacts, including several 500-year-old bonsai exemplars that are considered National Treasures.
Wearing a kimono is indeed a privilege but, before the Meiji Period, all Japanese wore kimonos in everyday life. Now they’re worn for special occasions. Learn why and how kimonos are worn. Then, you find out that making origami is good fun. Will you make an animal or a flower? Either way, take home your finished creation as a memento of your day.
